Global Rankings | World Dodgeball Federation (2024)

0. Preamble

This document provides an explanation on the rankings methodology and what consideration have been made with respect to scoring and calculations. It is important to note that these rankings are based on limited competitions to date.

1. Eligibility to be shown in the rankings

To be shown in the rankings, a nation must have participated in at least 1 of the last 3 World Championships or in at least 1 of the last 3 Continental Championships. Member nations that have not competed in any of the above-mentioned competitions will not appear in the rankings.

2. Different Rankings

The World Dodgeball Federation has a total of 12 rankings.

  • 3 rankings in the foam category for men’s, women’s and mixed.
  • 3 rankings in the cloth category for men’s, women’s and mixed.
  • 1 overall ranking for all 3 foam categories.
  • 1 overall ranking for all 3 cloth categories.
  • 1 overall world ranking combining all 6 categories.
  • 3 Medal Races, 1 for Foam, 1 for Cloth, 1 Overall.

3. Individual Rankings

The calculations for all 6 individual rankings (cloth and foam) follow the same rules.

3.1 Eligible Competitions

The individual rankings take into account the last 3 World Championships as well as the last 3 Continental Championships. Rankings are cumulative over the past 3 events, for both the World Championships and Continental Championships. When a new competition has finished, the results from oldest competition of the previous are removed and replaced with the latest results. In this way, only 3 competitions are represented in the rankings. This applies to both the World Championships and Continental Championships.

3.2 Point-Calculations

Nations receive points according to their final placements within those competitions.

In the World Championships and Continental Championships, teams earn 35 Ranking Points and deduct one point per their placing. The First Place therefore earns 34 Points (35-1). Each place thereafter similarly earns points decreasing by subtracting their final placing from the 35 Ranking points (i.e. 2nd Place – 33 points; 3rd Place – 32 points; etc.). Nations who do not compete in a tournament receive 0 Ranking Points.

  • A team will receive a 100% of the points for the most recent World Championships.
  • A team will receive a 75% of the points for the 2nd most recent World Championships.
  • A team will receive a 50% of the points for the 3rd most recent World Championships.

For the Continental Championships the same calculation (35 points – final position) applies, however all continental events are weighted 25%, with no different weighing on how recent they were.

Additionally, all allocated ranking points (World Championships and Continental Championships) will be multiplied by a factor. The factor is determined by how many teams participated in each competition.

  • 2-4 teams: x 1,0
  • 5-8 teams: x 1,2
  • 9-12 teams: x 1,4
  • 13-16 teams: x 1,6
  • 17-20 teams: x 1,8
  • 21 or more teams: x 2,0

3.3 United Kingdom

The UK was represented by “Team GB” at the World Championships in 2019 (men’s Foam) and 2022 (all 6 competitions). All WDBF rankings, except the Medal Races, show the home nations separately (England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland). The Team GB points have been allocated to them percentage-wise based on how many players of each nation have been present in each team. This data has been collected, checked and approved by WDBF. Going forward, the home nations will compete separately at the World Championships, and the rankings will more accurately reflect their positions over time.

3.4 Australia, ODF and DBFA

In the absence of an Oceania Dodgeball Federation (ODF) Continental Championship in 2023, Australia is awarded points awarded from the Dodgeball Federation of Asia (DBFA) Asian Dodgeball Championships, where they participated.

3.5 DBFA regionals 2023

At the 2023 Dodgeball Federation of Asia (DBFA) regionals, the final standings were not determined through placement games. Therefore, some nations finished at the same position, and median places have been determined.

For example: Two 5th place finishers get for the calculations the position-points 5,5 instead of both 5th or 5th and 6th.

3.6 Guest participants & 2nd-tier-teams

Members who have competed as guests at Continental Championships have not had their placements included in the ranking-calculations. For 2023, this includes Mexico at the NACDF Championships, Canada at the LAD Pan-American Championships, and Japan at the DBFA Asian Championships. This is to prevent points being earned twice by a Member in a given Championships cycle.

This also applies to second- or third competing teams from the same nation. In the case where a Member fields two or more teams in a competition, the best result of that nation is considered for the rankings.

Guest Example: competition with 8 teams, 7 members, 1 guest. Guest finishes first. For the rankings, 7 teams played, 2nd place will be 1st, 3rd will be second and so on.

Second Team Example: competition with 5 teams. 1 second tier team of a same nation competes. This nation finishes 1st and 4th. 1st place is considered for the rankings, 4th place will be removed for the ranking-calculations.

3.7 Friendlies and Other Sanctioned Tournaments

The Global Rankings are limited to results from the World Championships and Continental Championships. Results from other sanctioned events, such as the CSIT World Sport Games, TAFISA World Games, and World Police and Fire Games, do not contribute to the Global Rankings, unless that event is pre-determined by the WDBF and/or Continental Confederation to be a qualifying Continental Championship.

Friendly matches are not considered in the points calculations.

4. Overall Foam and Cloth Rankings

The Overall Foam Ranking shows the combined ranking for all 3 Foam divisions adding up all accumulated points in Foam tournaments (Men, Women, Mixed).

The Overall Cloth Ranking shows the combined ranking for all 3 Cloth divisions adding up all accumulated points in Cloth tournaments (Men, Women, Mixed).

5. Overall World Rankings

The Overall World Rankings show the combined ranking for all 6 divisions adding up all accumulated points (Cloth Men, Women, Mixed & Foam Men, Women, Mixed). Currently the rankings favour Foam nations due to Cloth being introduced at the World Championships for the first time in 2022. These should normalize following the next World Championships and Continental Championships cycle.

6. Medal Races

The Medal races show all WDBF World Championship Medal winners (Top 3 of each competition, Gold, Silver, Bronze). There are 3 Medal Races in place: 1 for Cloth, 1 for Foam, 1 Overall.

Specialty 1: from 2019 – 2022 the United Kingdom participated with a “Team GB” in World Championships and is therefore listed in the Medal Races as United Kingdom, whereas from 2023 onwards England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will be represented individually.

Specialty 2: In 2012 a combined USA & Canada Team won 1st Place in the womens foam category, and is therefore represented in the Medal Race as “North America”.
